When I first started considering Plexus, I mentioned to my sponsor that I had tried MANY diets over the years, and ALWAYS struggled to lose weight. What worked for most, just didn't work for me. She suggested I take a spit test to test for Candida. A spit-what? Yes... that's correct, a spit test. In a nutshell, all I had to do was spit into a glass of water and watch my spit.
If it turned into a jellyfish looking creature, fell apart into a cloud of fuzziness, or just SANK to the bottom... I had candida. So I did my spit test, and with as fast as that sucker looked like a jellyfish, I knew I was infested.
Okay, so I've got an issue with Candida... but wait! What is Candida??
Candida (technically called Candida albicans) is a microorganism in the category of yeast, fungi, and mold. It is normal for it to live in small amounts in the digestive system and on other body surfaces. However, under certain circumstances it will invade into deeper tissues and organs where it doesn’t belong, such as the liver and kidneys, and become very abundant. Once it gets that far, it entrenches itself as fungi do (think of how hard it can be to get rid of athlete’s foot or a fungal toenail). The yeast produces certain chemicals and affects cell functions in ways that create many symptoms, some of which can become serious.
The term “Candida” refers to the general overgrowth of various fungi and yeasts in the body, which flourish under certain circumstances to the point of causing illness. Candida has become a very common and often serious disease in our modern world, due both to modern practices that suppress these immune functions and to a fermenting diet.
What Causes Candida?
The causes of candida are not the same for each person. Some people have candida due to a combination of causes. Here are some causes of Candida:
· Antibiotics
· Birth Control Pills or Device
· Excessive Stress and Elevated Cortisol (a hormone released by stress)
· Tap Water Consumption
· Parasites and Intestinal Worms
· Constipation
· Drugs and Alcohol
· Hypothyroid (low thyroid levels)
· Immune Deficiency (weakened immune system)
· Hormonal Imbalance
· Excessive Bowel Cleansing
· Diabetes
· Toxic Metal
· Antacids
· Swimming in chlorinated water
· Alcoholism in Either Parent
· Consistent Exposure to Mold
· Use of Corticosteroids
· Exposure to Pesticides
The first thing I thought to myself was, "How long have I had this?" and "Why have I never heard of this before?" Then I thought, "What has this been doing to my body all this time?"
